The capital, Sarajevo then beckons with its Turkish heart and Bohemian nightlife. Another day is spent absorbing the powerful story of the Sarajevo Tunnel and the Srebrenica massacre. So much recent and ancient history and world-changing events are packed into such a small, yet stunning, country - it's beyond comprehension.

Finally, spend 2 days in the Bosnian mountains, staying in a lodge-style hotel whilst trying the excursions on offer such as horse-riding, 4x4 off-roading, hiking and mountain-biking.

Itinerary

Itinerary

Saturday: DUBROVNIK (or SPLIT) - KRAVICA WATERFALLS - MOSTAR

kravica-waterfalls-jumpThe Balkan Road Trip Bosnia Adventure starts in Dubrovnik or Split at 9.30am (please indicate preferred start destination when booking) and we kick off with a few pleasant surprises. The mini-bus may be on its way to Mostar but there is a swimming stop in one of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s secret paradise spots - a truly spectacular waterfall with a large, deep plunge pool to bathe in. It has to be seen to be believed and is perfect for a refreshing dip.

After a swim and possibly lunch or a beer or two at the water’s edge, it’s onward to Mostar. This city, famous for its arched bridge and Turkish Old Town, is the most stunning city in Bosnia-Herzegovina. You have the entire day in and around Mostar on Sunday so for now it’s time to kick back in the evening and savour the amazing restaurants, bars and clubs on offer. Accommodation is in the Old Town.

Recommended Evening Activities:

  • Try the local specialities of grilled trout, filled steaks and pastries at a riverside restaurants in the Turkish Old Town.
  • Sip a cocktail and smoke a shisha under the stars by the Old Bridge.

Monday: MOSTAR - KONJIC - SARAJEVO

We leave Mostar for Sarajevo early, as there is a whole day stop halfway between the 2 cities. Bosnia has so much to offer but no marketing budget to let everyone know about it. So our Balkan Road Trips really show the hidden parts of this culturally-rich country and this stop off in Konjic reveals why. Explore Konjic' beauty spot taking a hike with your guide and feel refreshed in its cool water or experience one of our most popular optional excursions for this day:

Whether you are relaxing in Konjic or rafting, both groups meet up for lunch after their activities and we head off to Sarajevo late afternoon.

Having checked in to the Sarajevo hostel, the city’s bars, clubs and restaurants are there to be explored, with some excellent locals' hangouts as recommended by your Sarajevan guide....

Optional Activities

• White Water Rafting

Tuesday: SARAJEVO

sarajevo market in Bosnia tourSarajevo really is one of Europe’s crossroads. Which other capital has a mosque, Orthodox church, synagogue and a Catholic church all within metres of each other? It is also an Olympic City with the 1984 Winter Olympics famously held here.

However, its recent history is tinged with tragedy – the shots that started the First World War were fired here (when Archduke Franz Ferdinanad was assassinated) and the city was under bombardment for over 3 years during the Yugoslav Wars of the 90s.

Sarajevo can be enjoyed in a variety of ways: the shopping and market-places in the Turkish Quarter are superb and around every corner is a pleasant surprise: from the Sarajevsko Pivo beer brewery to the Museum on the spot where Franz Ferdinand was shot.

Tuesday is the guide's day off, but you will be provided with a map and a list of recommended places to visit in the capital throughout the day and evening.

Overnight in Sarajevo once more.

Optional Activities

• Sarajevo City Tour (12 Euros)

Wednesday: SARAJEVO - TUNNEL MUSEUM - SREBRENICA - BOSNIAN MOUNTAINS

sarajevo-tunnel

Wednesday is the war tour day. Firstly, we visit for a location near the airport to visit the Tunnel Museum* and discover more about this incredible story of defiance and survival. Then, it's a 2/5 hour drive to Srebrenica, the site of the worst massacre in Europe since WWII. This can be quite a powerful and moving day but the Bosniaks welcome visitors, as they do not want the world to forget what happened there in 1995. A local guide will relate the events as they unfolded and the memorial centre has photos and footage.

THE 5-DAY VERSION OF THE TOUR WILL DROP GUESTS BACK IN SARAJEVO AT THIS POINT, AFTER VISITING SREBRENICA.

Late afternoon, we head for the hills! Bosnia hosted the winter Olympics in 1984 and it would be a crime not to spend some time in the mountains to find out why the country was granted this privilege. Overnight in a mountain lodge.

*Tunnel Museum Entrance Fee (approx. 7.5 Euros) is payable locally.

Thursdays: BOSNIAN MOUNTAINS

bjelasnica, bosnian mountainsBjelasnica and Igman are 2 of Bosnia's Olympic Mountains and after a night in the lodge, You can either enjoy the mountain air in your lungs and take a hike with your guide or dedicate your day to one of the optional higher-altitude activities.

Optional Activities

• Mountain Biking (subject to availability at bike hire outlet)

• Horse-riding.(40 Euros)

• 4x4 Tour.(40 Euros)

Overnight again in the lodge.

Fridays: BOSNIAN MOUNTAINS - DUBROVNIK

balkangroup

We leave the mountains and make our way back to the Croatian coast.

This day of the tour offers many options that your guide will lead you through according to availability, weather and group preference:

• Blagaj. A stunning Dervish monastery in one of the best locations to have lunch in Bosnia-Herzegovina!

• Vjetrenica Caves. Amongst Bosnia's endless riches is a secret cave network that would be the envy of any country in the world. These caves are home to intriguing remnants of habitation by early man, the "human fish" and intricate cave drawings.

• Pocitelj. One of the country's jewels, a pocket Turkish town nestled on the side of a cliff on the Neretva.

We arrive in Dubrovnik late afternoon, with a drop-off at the bus station. Accommodation is not included in Dubrovnik but after everyone has had the chance to freshen up in their respective hotels and hostels, farewell drinks are in order in the Old Town!
